ICAITM 2016-cloud computing in Africa is possible

Lancecourse.com was glad to be invited to the maiden edition of ICAITM - The International Conference on Advanced Trends in ICT and Management organized by the prestigious IT school BlueCrest University College.

The conference took place at the Accra International Conference Center under the theme: Cloud Computing for Sustainable Development in Africa.

Great topic for us at lancecourse.com.

Cloud computing today is the big trend in the world especially in most enterprises that have understood that the efficiency and future of their business are on the cloud. We had the chance to listen to many speakers who defined what cloud computing is and what it is today for Africa, especially for Ghana.

Various speakers tackled the topics of feasibility, challenges, and probable solutions on how cloud computing could be made possible in Ghana. Dr. Edoo, of The University of Education, Winneba made mention of the importance of research and how they have been conducting some toward helping Ghana with cloud computing.

Services are countless. But many questions have been raised concerning laws and regulations, geo-localization and security of data.

At the same time the representatives of giant firms like Google, Oracle, and IBM, who were also present, made us understand how far they have been implementing cloud computing and assisting people and corporations in Ghana and the rest of the world. Google with its Google App for Businesses, Oracle with its database systems used to feed many financial and governmental institutions, and IBM with its various cloud stores. Most speakers like the Country Director of Microsoft Ghana, Derick Appiah made mention of how Microsoft is supporting the education system so far with its cloud e-learning systems.

Even though Mr. George Atta-Boateng, Director General, NITA Ghana explained how the National Information Technology Agency is working hard to equip the country with fiber and connectivity facilities, a lot is left to be done if we really want Africa to enjoy most facilities of cloud computing and encourage sustainable development in Africa:

  • There must be partnership and collaboration between different actors in the field
  • Research must be empowered and encouraged from universities to private research centers
  • Companies and most actors have to educate people about the advantages of the cloud
  • Laws and policies on data management must be well-defined and followed by governments
  • Electricity and connectivity issues have to be considered as major cases
  • etc.

Hopefully, many things will be different from now on, it's a good time for us to wake up and start thinking of better solutions. We hope students and other participants will understand the real value of cloud computing in this era. As Mr. Joseph Assuming Country Director, Oracle Ghana said, this is probably a turning point for cloud computing. More is to come and we need to start taking advantage of that now in order to remain on track.
