4 Ways PRAYERS help me to be HEALTHY as a Software Developer
If you never took your health seriously or never thought of how vital it's to be healthy you need to join the field of software development. In one of my previous articles I wrote:
The life of a software engineer is precious and they deserve to live as long as possible, or at least, we need to come up with solutions that could help us do much more work even in a short period of a lifetime.
Sadly, most of us[developers] become conscious of the situation after we are affected. I have been a developer for the past 19 years. I paid a price: a broken back. Not too obvious though, but it's an important concern I have to endure every day. So for some years now, I have decided to make my health a priority.
I have started observing myself in search of solutions and ways to be healthy. Because it's in software development you realize that even a simple headache can hinder your life. To attain good health I started observing my alimentation, my sleep durations and cycles, sitting postures and durations, work environment and equipment, etc.
Among many of my findings, I would like to share with you the benefits of daily prayers Muslims do.
- Elimination of loneliness
Software development is a time-consuming activity. It easily takes the developer's attention and drags them into the darkness of loneliness. Going to the mosque, at least on Fridays, helps me to recover human connections. It heals my feelings of loneliness. And when you do that five times, you don't even realize that there is something called loneliness.
- Short / Intermediate pauses
The fact that a Muslim has to pray five times helps me to have at least, 3-4 times to rest a bit. That's from the first-afternoon prayer to the last prayer of the day. Most companies give one-time break a day. While this is relative to every company, but it's a common pattern. Those moments of prayers help me to be alone in my mind and feel myself. It frees my brain for a moment, increases my focus, helps me to brainstorm my routines so far, and gives me the chance to deepen my thoughts and look for answers within me on things I find difficult to fix.
- Physical health
It's undeniable that Islamic prayers help physically. The movements of ups and downs, squatting, bending, etc. help adjust the body articulations and regulate the blood flow.
- Discipline
In my opinion, this is the most important and most beneficial reward. You cannot achieve much in life if you don't have any discipline whatsoever. The strict respect of prayer time shapes our brain as a natural clock. We are always conscious of time, hence we stay more focused. I wake up with my day planned. I need to meet the little deadlines between prayers.
Bottom line
This is not to convert anybody to any belief system. I intend to help you realize that some people, due to the belief system they are into, give them some quasi-automatic and systematic advantages.
If you do not belong to such circles and want to also enjoy such benefits, you need to look into your current system(maybe Buddist, Christianism, Taoism, or anything at all.) and find analogous solutions to your advantage.
This is absolutely far from me trying to preach any faith or any spiritual thing. That's why I did not mention any spiritual benefit. It's only in my mind. Others will not necessarily share the same feeling.
