Copy, but don't Paste!
We can make our standard.
From our food to our manners of defecating is commonly copied from others. I am not saying we shouldn't try to look at them but please don't paste, let us make ours from it after thinking. If I am talking this way it is because some common problems are still hunting our society, especially in the IT fields.
-
When a company wants a website, they will say :We want it like Google does or something similar.
-
When a company needs software, they will say: We prefer Adobe/Oracle products to locally made ones.
-
When the government has a road project, they will call the Chinese to make it.
-
Worst, in companies you usually hear, go and copy it from this or that website or make exactly like so so website hrrrr, boring. Please CEO, let us put in practice our creativity.
I can't mention all but they are all at the same principle.
And the funniest thing is they will acquire those international standard services but they can't make use of 5% of their features. Why are we finally going to school?! I thought I was going to be trusted and employed after school.
I deeply believe we can create our own market with our own products. We need to start thinking and applying our own creativity.
If you don't understand what I am trying to say, take google.com for example, what do you know about Google?
-
For ordinary people at most you will know Gmail and Google Search
-
For middle minds they may also know upon that, Google Doc, Google shopping,
-
But for addicts like us, we could add Google IO, Google Developer, Google Analytics, Google Adword, Google Code, etc.
In fact, this is small compared to the services Google really has. There are many other websites and services like that and we are not aware of them.
Do you know that we have access to less than 10% of internet resources in Africa? I guess NO. But ask yourself what about the other 80%?
It is not because the White person necessarily wants to hide it from us, but we are not mature enough to understand and make use of them. That is what we call a standard, our standard is too low for these services and at the same time all services we are producing are seen as low-standard (useless) services to them.
Another concrete example of this problem is your phone, there are some applications in your phone that you have never used, or worse, you don't even know what they are used for. I am sorry, we really need to re-think our own products and manners.
This problem usually happens because we Africans we always think of how to make money and eat food into our stomachs (alone) without thinking of our forthcoming. I read an article on kabenlah.com last week where my brother Emmanuel Kabenlah Cudjoe was mentioning that our fellow bloggers should stop customizing their content as typical Ghanaian content by adopting an international view of their works. Basically, that's how I understood him.
In money money-making way, I agree with you, but who will educate our own people here? When are we going to have our first news website in Twi (Ghana's commonly spoken language)?
So my idea is this: As I am not an IT Boko Haram, so I agree their (Others) level is 500% higher than ours and we need to imitate them. But let's go easy. Let's us look at them and try to convert things to our level (standard) . Our accounting software, e-learning platforms, websites, blogs, etc. Please let's dilute it and make it simple, easy to understand and to use which is adequate to our current level.
