Are you planning to have a website one day?

So you also want to have a website? Do you know there are more than 1 billion websites in this world? What do you think your website is about to offer that none of the 1 billion has done yet? Or do you think doing exactly what some are already doing can still make your business prosper and that will distinguish you from a lot? Or are you probably creating the website and having one just like your friends/competitors?

What does it really involve to have a website? a business and money-making website? This is the question I am about to discuss with you in this post.

The myth

It's new to hear friends and relatives always talking about creating or possessing a website. Either for their businesses, their portfolio or just for learning purposes. And most people learning web development have in mind to create their own websites, have their own website. In fact, that's why they strive a lot to master the science. But most of them, most of us, seem not to really understand WHY a website, then WHEN.

The facts

When I started creating websites I was also thinking like that. But two main things were in my mind:

  • To know how to create all types of websites
  • Create a website for people and make money fast

But behind these ideas, I forgot one, the most important:

  • Create websites for me and offer them as a service to the world.

The world has changed. Websites themselves were fashion products, but today, they've become tools.

This is the mistake of many learners today and this makes many people fall into the idea that tech is not the rising field everyone should focus on. If you remain thinking of websites in the old fashion, you are probably not going to get satisfaction.

So, what?

That said, creating a website is not a big problem because there are so many ways to create one these days which can cost you from a minute to months.

Your main concern should be what your website is going to offer your users. If you fail to offer something, yes, something cool, I doubt you are on track. This is simply because nobody cares today about how beautiful or ugly your website looks. Or, how hard you worked on it, etc. No, no. No one really cares about that. The time for that is gone. Today the majority of people online can easily set up a web page/site for their businesses for free in no time. This isn't a problem at all for anyone.

Build a website that has something to offer different from itself.

Then, when can I create my website?

Creating a website is a huge responsibility even though many people still think it's just the build. As I said previously, the building is not a problem. Google.com is number one in the world according to AlexaRank but it doesn't have the best look and feel.

But the value the site offers is huge and useful to the whole world. Now look at the google mountain view HQ bellow:

Google Mountain View Headquaters

So think of it as a car with beautiful skin, nice seats, and a wonderful dashboard, but inside it, there is a huge engine that always moves the car. Then that engine is made up of many cogs each one makes a hard effort and maintains a synchronized rhythm to make the engine work.

You create a website when you know you could create a real company and manage it

This is far away from scaring you. Remember we have billions of websites, and this number keeps on increasing every second. There is always a place for yours. but the point here is to create a living website. A website that lives well and makes its owner live well as well. When you intend to have such website(s) consider this warning as very serious.

So, what's really the problem with having a website?

Nothing really. Just work like in any other business which requires constant attention, except in the case of a website you must pay more attention some these additional few things:

  • Daily updates
  • Permanent security checks
  • Daily tests
  • Constant maintenance
  • Learning from your mistakes
  • Marketing of all types
  • Dealing with geeky developers and designers
  • No holidays for websites, basically they won't be a day you'll close your doors
  • Studying the site's behavior every day
  • Etc

It's really hard to entirely define how the final website(if there is one) will look like or how it's going to work. It's a process in which you discover the real things to do. That's why the older the website, the better it's.
