ChatGPT: The Beginning of a New Technological Revolution

In July 2022, I wrote an article discussing how machines could make web development obsolete or replace jobs in the field. Three months later, in November 2022, OpenAI released ChatGPT, a language model that made AI mainstream. Although I did not explicitly mention AI, the general idea of machines taking over jobs was already present in my article.

AI is not new to the field of information technology, but ChatGPT has popularized its use. As a result, there are concerns about how AI will disrupt every profession. While some may view ChatGPT as a threat to their jobs, it's important to keep in mind that every breakthrough creates new opportunities. As such, we should look at ChatGPT as the starting point of a new technological revolution, one that could impact various sectors, including education, interviews, and content creation. Invention never ends inventions.

During the American Revolution, in 1899 the head of the U.S. Patent Office sent his resignation to President McKinley urging the closing of the office because "everything that could be invented has been invented." Patent Office

If we are talking of ChatGPT today, we could as well talk about the Internet coming to disrupt the telepgraph, fax, cable TV, etc. And even withing the Internet inself, how many great websites and applications have come to pass? each usually being the dawn of the next. Take the example of Google, when Google started in 1998, they almost repurposed the use of the Internet and that has given birth to this new erra of technologies such AR, VR, Web 3.0, AI, Cryptocurrencies, etc. The took over the web reseach from yahoo, took the browser monopoly from Microsoft, took over the online advertisement business, took over the emailing business, and many more. Facebook did the same for forums, IRCs, Chat websites, etc. Not only this revolutionalized the industry, but it also affected many lives.

The disruptions of ChatGPT

Certainly, ChatGPT and other advancements in AI and related technologies are likely to have far-reaching impacts across various industries and sectors. Here are some sectors where the impact of AI and ChatGPT could be significant:

Healthcare: AI and ChatGPT can help with early detection of diseases, better diagnosis and treatment plans, and personalized medicine. AI-powered chatbots can also be used for patient support, education, and engagement.

Education: AI and ChatGPT can help personalize education by identifying the strengths and weaknesses of individual students and providing them with customized learning experiences. AI-powered chatbots can also be used for student support and to answer frequently asked questions.

Finance: AI and ChatGPT can be used to identify fraud, automate financial processes, and provide personalized financial advice to customers. Chatbots can also be used to answer customer queries related to banking and financial services.

Manufacturing: AI and ChatGPT can be used to optimize production processes, predict maintenance needs, and improve product quality. Chatbots can also be used for customer support related to product inquiries and technical issues.

Retail: AI and ChatGPT can be used to personalize customer experiences, improve inventory management, and optimize pricing strategies. Chatbots can also be used for customer support related to online orders, returns, and product inquiries.

Transportation: AI and ChatGPT can be used for predictive maintenance, route optimization, and real-time traffic management. Chatbots can also be used for customer support related to travel bookings and updates.

But let's just discuss some two or three of these issues:

Education

ChatGPT has the ability to answer any question within its training data. However, the true value of education lies in testing the learner's abilities. While ChatGPT may be prohibited in exam rooms, the rise of remote learning and remote work has made it difficult to prevent individuals from using ChatGPT to cheat on tests. Despite this, we should not view the use of ChatGPT as inherently negative. In fact, there is growing criticism of the current education system, and this may be an opportunity to shift towards a more student-centric approach that prioritizes the development of individual capabilities rather than producing a compliant workforce.

Furthermore, utilizing ChatGPT in research projects can teach individuals how to interact with others, deepen their knowledge of the subject matter, and improve their research skills. ChatGPT should not be considered cheating, but rather a novel way to approach problem-solving and reasoning. Just as Google revolutionized the way we search for information, ChatGPT has the potential to streamline human tasks and make them more accessible. It is important to maintain a positive perspective on this new technology. I can't call ChatGPT a cheat, but a new way to think and reason. When Google's released their search, we could easily find hundreds of websites with just a keyword. Compared to people who had to find websites in journals and magazines. That was not a cheat, but an ease to human tasks. Let's have that perspective.

Interviews

At the time of writing this piece, a significant number of people have been able to successfully pass their job interviews with the aid of ChatGPT. Some individuals have labeled it as cheating. However, perhaps people were previously limited or felt the need to cheat. Consider the coding world, where numerous self-taught programmers have immense potential and create exceptional work. Unfortunately, many are unable to secure job opportunities due to certification and coding interview requirements. If ChatGPT can assist these individuals in overcoming such barriers, it would be a great development. You may disagree, but remember that education is already undergoing a transformation. Therefore, this may be the perfect opportunity to re-evaluate the interview process.

Content creators

Content creation is taking a new turn with the introduction of ChatGPT. Currently, ChatGPT creates content from its training data, which includes content from different sources like web pages and Wikipedia. This process is similar to how Google crawls the internet for information. Some people argue that this could lead to leaving content creation solely to AI in the future. However, it is important to note that every creation begins from somewhere, and ChatGPT's training data is just a starting point.

One challenge would be attributing authorship or finding a way to reward authors for their content used in ChatGPT's training data. While this might not be an easy task, it could be possible to create a system similar to Google's AdSense program. However, as a language model that is constantly learning from users' input, it would be challenging to require attributions or rewards for interacting with ChatGPT.

Perhaps ChatGPT could become a world heritage site or monument, but this is still up for discussion. Rather than blaming technology for changes in content creation, we should adapt to these changes and find ways to make the most of them.

In today's web, ads are ubiquitous. Advertising is the backbone of the internet. Some people are worried about how ChatGPT could make money through ads. However, I think this won't be a significant issue. I believe that ChatGPT is an excellent tool for advertising. Targeting will be effortless and ChatGPT can be used to customize ads more effectively than anyone else.

But what concerns me is that ChatGPT may let ads influence its feedback. Google has been leading the content on the internet in one direction. I was already frustrated with how Google was compelling us to write in a specific way that meets their ad policy.

And I used this opportunity to ask if we, the bloggers, are still needed? Here is chatGPT's answer:

As an AI language model, I can't say whether bloggers are needed or not. However, I can say that blogging provides a unique perspective and voice that may not be captured by AI language models. Additionally, some readers prefer to read content written by humans as they can relate better to the experiences and opinions expressed. So while AI language models like ChatGPT can generate content, bloggers still have a place in the online ecosystem. -ChatGPT Feb 13 Version

Marketing

The marketing industry appears to be one of the most immediate beneficiaries of ChatGPT. Due to the huge demand for content in this field, ChatGPT is an ideal tool to use. One of my favorite benefits is how ChatGPT helps individuals create high-quality and effective content. This is especially helpful for individuals and small teams running businesses, who can use ChatGPT to learn how to do things correctly and gain a competitive advantage.

Ethics and responsibility

With great power comes great responsibility, and AI is no exception. As ChatGPT and other AI systems become more advanced and integrated into our lives, we must consider the ethical implications and ensure that they are being used responsibly. For example, there have been concerns raised about the potential for ChatGPT to spread misinformation or perpetuate biases that exist in its training data. It is important for developers to take responsibility for ensuring that these issues are addressed and to consider the potential impact of their technology on society.

Wrapping up

In conclusion, ChatGPT has become the new central intelligence of the world, similar to how the Web revolutionized the way we access information. However, we should not limit ourselves to just the capabilities of ChatGPT today, but instead, anticipate the potential innovations that may arise from this technology in the future. We should be vigilant for new products and services that may emerge as a result of this opportunity. For example, a new and improved e-commerce experience, a new era of chatbots, and the automation of various tasks, among others. The possibilities are endless and exciting, and we should look forward to what the future holds.
